CCEA update on evidence that can be used in this year’s alternative appeals process
Following the cancellation of the summer 2020 examinations due to COVID-19, we put in place a process to award GCSE, A and AS level grades based on a combination of teacher professional judgement and statistical modelling, as directed by the Minister of Education. A key element of the process is to ensure that qualifications standards are maintained this year. There has been no change in this direction or our approach.
CCEA is working hard to produce this year’s provisional A, AS and GCSE results, in exceptional circumstances this year, to ensure that students can progress on to the next step of their journey. Due to the alternative awarding arrangements this year, an alternative appeals process has been set up, which is free this year.
We have released student and parent information about the appeals process, which can be accessed at www.ccea.org.uk/summer-awarding.
Schools and colleges may hold robust student prior performance evidence from mock examinations and, for CCEA GCSE examinations, some completed units of the GCSE specification. As part of our appeals process, this year, we will consider such evidence.

This year, due to the alternative arrangements it is not possible to ask for examination papers to be reviewed as would be normal. We recognise that there is robust evidence available on student prior performance and that this could be considered within the appeals process. The opportunity for schools and colleges to submit mock examination information and completed GCSE units provides a broader scope of evidence for appeal.
