United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child Resource Hub
Webinars
Children and Young People's Rights Webinar, 3 December 2024
To celebrate Universal Children’s Day, Chris Quinn, the NI Commissioner for Children and Young People (NICCY) and CCEA joined together to host two live chats for (i) primary and (ii) post primary teachers and pupils to learn more about the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
Pupils had the chance to explore and submit questions about issues affecting them and find out more about how their lives are governed and how they can participate to improve the quality of their own lives.
Ensuring that young people understand their rights through the UNCRC are relevant across the Northern Ireland Curriculum, particularly within Personal Development and Mutual Understanding (PDMU) and Learning for Life and Work (LLW) at post-primary, and within the Preventative Curriculum.
Engaging with children’s rights can help pupils to:
- respect their own rights and the rights of others;
- recognise the interdependence of people, communities and the environment; and
- contribute to the welfare of school, the community and the environment.
During the webinar session, the panel didn’t have time to answer all questions submitted. A commitment was made to follow up with answers to all the unasked questions. The recordings of the webinars, and the subsequent reports highlighting the unanswered questions, can be found below.
