Northern Ireland Languages Week

As part of Northern Ireland Languages Week (30 January – 3 February) CCEA is raising awareness of the benefits studying languages can have on school children.

Studying languages not only increases confidence in listening, speaking, reading, writing and knowledge about language, it also helps learners discover more about other cultures, countries, communities and social and global issues.

Roisin Radcliffe, CCEA’s Modern Languages Programme Manager said:

Learning languages expands students’ opportunities. Whether it is to get the most out of foreign travel, hobbies, interests or career development, immersion in the culture and language of another country or region helps our understanding of the world around us. CCEA’s Modern Language qualifications in French, Spanish, Irish and German are an ideal passport to this incredible and rewarding journey.

Studying modern languages is statutory at Key Stage 3 (ages 11 to 14) and, while not compulsory at Key Stage 4 (ages 14-16), Northern Ireland students should have access to at least one course in an official language of the European Union that leads to a qualification.
