Uniform Mark Scale

4.1 What is a uniform mark scale?

The uniform mark scale is the mechanism awarding bodies use to convert ‘raw marks’ to ‘uniform marks’.

This is a scale used to smooth out any variations in levels of difficulty of units sat by candidates in different examination series’. For example, the level of difficulty of an examination may vary slightly from series to series. Where this happens the grade boundaries may be changed slightly between one examination series and another to ensure results are comparable between series’ and subjects. These raw mark grade boundaries are mapped onto a uniform mark scale. The scale for each unit can be found below at 4.2.

Your Provisional Statement of Results will show both the ‘raw’ and the ‘uniform’ marks.
