CCEA Regulation Publishes Further Guidance Regarding Private Candidates

CCEA Regulation has published further guidance for schools and colleges with regard to the awarding arrangements for ‘private candidates’ entered for GCSE, AS and A Level examinations this summer.
In common with other parts of the UK, Northern Ireland has a number of ‘private candidates’. These are students who have not been taught in a school or college because they might have been home-schooled, be following distance learning programmes or studying independently.
Awarding arrangements for the summer 2020 exam series require that schools and colleges provide, for each subject, centre assessment grades for their students within each grade. Where schools and colleges have accepted entries from private candidates, those students should be included in this process where the principal or college head is confident that they and their staff have seen sufficient evidence of the student’s achievements to make such an informed judgement.
Where this is not possible the information published outlines further guidance on alternative sources of evidence and validation by schools and colleges where that evidence has to be sought from outside their centre.
Should the principal or college head feel unable to reach a judgement which ensures compliance with CCEA requirements, the student will not be included in the centre submission. CCEA Regulation’s guidance will provide further advice for those candidates. Students should also note that they will have the opportunity to take the examination during the next available series.
