There’s an urgent need in today’s world to protect children from potential harm linked to the environment and climate crisis. At the same time, Education for Sustainable Development has been part of the Northern Ireland Curriculum right from its inception in 2007. It should inform curriculum delivery across the Areas of Learning and at every key stage.

This paper sets out a contemporary view of the place of sustainability in the curriculum. We hope that you find its suggestions helpful as you seek opportunities to create relevant, meaningful learning experiences in your school.

Our timeline is a summary of key local and global commitments to sustainability from 2007 onwards. You may find it useful to inform decision-making and help inspire action at a whole-school level.

Following on from the DfE’s publication of the results of the climate literacy survey of school leavers in 2024, the Royal Meteorological Society are looking for schools to participate in their 2025 survey.

Danske Bank has partnered with Young Enterprise to co-develop an innovative new educational programme focusing on biodiversity entrepreneurship.

Challenge: Biodiversity is aimed at post-primary school children in Years 8-14 and showcases innovative local businesses from across the agri-food, infrastructure, manufacturing and tourism sectors.

Each school will have the chance to submit entries to be judged by industry experts and win a share of £5000 of prizes. Entries must be submitted by 3pm on Friday 30 May 2025.
