Woven in Ulster: Ulster-Scots and the Story of Linen

Unit 1 - Flax: from Seeds to Stricks

This Unit examines the processes involved in producing Ulster linen from the sowing of flax seeds to the harvesting of the flax crop. It covers the treatments the harvested plants receive in the many stages through which they pass, before the marketing of cloth. It will alert pupils to the significance of the linen industry in the history and commercial life of rural and urban communities and some of the Ulster-Scots vocabulary used by the linen workers.
