Woven in Ulster: Ulster-Scots and the Story of Linen
Unit 2 - Yarn to Cloth
This Unit examines the production of linen in Ulster, focusing on the key processes of spinning and weaving into cloth. It familiarises pupils with cottage or home-based linen making, and shows how this involved the whole family in a variety of roles. It explains that home-based working allowed workers a degree of independence before widespread industrialisation moved linen manufacturing into mills. Pupils are also introduced to the language of one of the Ulster-Scots ‘rhyming weaver’ poets.
