Belfast Murals

A mural is any piece of artwork painted directly on a wall. The Belfast murals can be found in many parts of the city. They tell stories about Northern Ireland’s past and present political and religious divisions. Also, they show colourful celebratory images, for example George Best and characters from C.S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. It is believed that almost 2000 murals have been documented since the 1970s. In 2014 there were approximately 300 murals on display in Belfast. Thousands of tourists come to visit the murals every year to learn about the history and culture of Belfast and Northern Ireland. It could be said that they are the most famous murals in Europe.
