Harland and Wolff Shipyard, Belfast

The Belfast shipyard, Harland and Wolff, was one of the largest shipbuilding yards in the world. In its heyday in the early twentieth century, Harland and Wolff built over 70 ships for the company White Star Line. It is famous for building the Titanic. Over 25000 men worked at Harland and Wolff at this time, but by 1933 this had dropped to fewer than 3000. Today, Harland and Wolff has adopted new ways of working and offers various services in the maritime and off-shore industries. The shipyard is also famous for the big yellow cranes, Samson and Goliath, which still dominate the skyline today.
