Jocelyn Bell Burnell
Jocelyn Bell Burnell (Dame Susan Jocelyn Bell Burnell, DBE, FRS) is an astrophysicist from Northern Ireland. In 1967, she discovered a new type of star known as a pulsar. This was a huge breakthrough discovery. With pulsars, scientists can test some very important scientific theories.
The Royal Society, a society of the world’s most eminent scientists, described pulsars as ‘one of the greatest astronomical discoveries of the twentieth century’.
