Northern Ireland women’s football team

The Northern Ireland women’s football team have yet to compete in a major tournament but that is about to change. In April 2021 they qualified for the European Championships in England in 2022. They beat Ukraine 2–0 at Seaview, Belfast and will go down in history as the first Northern Ireland women’s team to qualify for a major tournament. The captain, Marissa Callaghan, and Nadene Caldwell scored to secure victory. The IFA has a long-term plan, from 2019–24 to increase the number of registered female players from 1600 to 3200 in Northern Ireland. With the Northern Ireland’s team’s recent qualification for the Euros, many young girls are already inspired to take up the game.
