Saint Patrick’s Day

Saint Patrick’s Day is a cultural and religious celebration held on 17 March each year. Saint Patrick’s Day parades began in North America in the eighteenth century but did not spread to Ireland until the twentieth century. Saint Patrick's Day is the biggest day in Ireland's cultural calendar with a host of events throughout Ireland in celebration of the nation's patron saint. In Northern Ireland Saint Patrick’s Day parades are held in Belfast, Derry/Londonderry, Armagh, Downpatrick where Saint Patrick built his first church and many other locations. These are fun-packed, cross-community festivals with live entertainment and family events. Since 2010 famous landmarks have been lit up green on Saint Patrick’s Day as part of Tourism Ireland’s Going Green for Saint Patrick’s Day.
