Tayto Castle Factory

Set deep in the heart of the Ulster countryside is Tayto Castle in Tandragee where the unique Tayto crisps have been made since 1956. The castle is over 500 years old and was originally the home of the O’Hanlon clan, one of the mightiest and most powerful clans in all of Ireland. In 1955 the castle was in need of repair and was bought by local businessman, Thomas Hutchinson. In 1956 he had the innovative idea to make a new potato product called crisps. He started making Tayto crisps with a special unique recipe. In the castle there is a closely guarded room where the unique Tayto Cheese and Onion flavour is made to the same recipe as it has used for the last 65 years! Tayto is now the largest British-owned crisp and snack manufacturer producing over 5 million packs a day across five sites. The Tayto Group includes brands such as Tayto, Golden Wonder, REAL, Jonathan Crisp, Mr Porky and Midland Snacks.
