Northern Ireland at 100 - 100 Greats

100 Greats 1921-2021

Rhys McClenaghan

Rhys McClenaghan, born 1999 in County Down, is an Irish gymnast competing internationally for Ireland and Northern Ireland. At the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia, he won the gold for Northern Ireland on the pommel horse. He went on to win the 2018 European Championships. In 2019 he became the first Irish gymnast to qualify to a world championship final and won a bronze medal on the pommel horse.

In April 2021 he qualified for the pommel horse final at the 2021 European Championships in Basel, Switzerland. He achieved fifth position in the final. He had been suffering wrist soreness and didn’t score as highly as he had done in other competitions. Rhys has spoken about what it takes to get to the top – the dedication, hard work and acceptance of failure. Despite his disappointment at Basel his focus is now turning to the Tokyo 2021 Summer Olympic Games.
